Charlestown Gallery

Operating since 2013, the Gallery is a registered non-profit dedicated to giving Caribbean and African diaspora artists a place to be seen.

The story we tell here didn’t start in 2013 — it started long before, across the Atlantic. Nevis carries an African inheritance in its rhythms, its foodways, and its people, and Charlestown Gallery exists to give that inheritance a wall. You’ll see it directly in the work: pieces named for Sankofa, the Akan symbol for reaching back to move forward, and Ikenga, the Igbo symbol of personal strength and achievement. This isn’t a theme we added to the gallery. It’s the reason the gallery exists — a place where the line between Africa and the Caribbean stays visible, not forgotten, and where artists on both sides of that line find a wall to show on.

We are a small, working non-profit, not a polished institution, and we’d rather stay that way. Every piece on these walls was made by an artist still building their practice, still finding their audience, and still deciding what kind of artist they want to be — many rooted here in St. Kitts & Nevis, others visiting from elsewhere in the African diaspora. Buying, visiting, or simply asking questions is part of how that gets to happen.
